Franchise Opportunities vsStarting from Scratch

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

So you have decided to become a business owner now you have a couple options. You can purchase a franchise or build a company from scratch. Different approaches suit different people.

Pick up a business magazine and your will find lots of franchises for sale. Many companies you use are probably franchises, from restaurants to cleaning services. Franchises are typically founded on a tried and tested business model. When you buy into a franchise, many aspects of the business including marketing are taken care of off. There are many different franchises available. Some will give you the business name, equipment and everything you need for start up, others only give you the basics and you still have to buy or lease a location, purchase equipment and the inventory you will need.

The two main downsides of buying a franchise however are that you are not free to change much of your business model, and the cost is often restrictive. Visit the Key Mergers website for more information or if you would like to f you would like to buy a business or for details of available franchises.

Building your very own company from the bottom up however means that you can grow the business organically over time, you can limit your initial outlay and you can be as creative with the direction of your business as you like. However, your model may not be tried and tested and you will likely have to develop your own support network from the ground up along with your business.

So, as you have probably gathered by now, the factors determining whether to buy a franchise or start a business from scratch are dependent on what your want to get out of the enterprise. Its a choice only you can make.

Greater Gaming Notebook Saturation Great for Consumers

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

The times where laptops for gaming were a specialist sector are fading extremely rapidly. They were basically like a low volume manufacturing plant. Did not sell in numbers but generated a lot of markup on each laptop. Everybody wanted this kind of notebook, but at the price they were going for it was plainly not affordable. I think they were never the most practical but I still think they were the best laptop computers. I believe we all got excited about them but the vast number would highly unlikely buy laptop computers that were so pricey. Well established manufacturers have recently launched their own gaming laptops so its all changing as I say this.

I guess they would categorize it as a high grade laptop and make a lot of cash on these particularly with their mass production techniques. With such narrow profits on other laptops it is not a surprise they would like to be involved. Local companies cannot compete with them in convincing prospects to buy laptop computers. I am pretty certain that littler retailers will be forced to drop their prices for them to compete. I am fairly sure that the established manufacturers will attempt to squeeze the little ones out. Local system builders cannot actually employ a brand name like the larger competitors can.

To my astonishment the mass produced gaming laptop computers are as good if not better than the best laptop computers in the market. Still though, for the little small companies this may prove to be good. The custom build feature is a big plus to the consumer. These types of buyers normally are well informed on the technology and can compare part for part. For a few customers specs and statistics are more important than style.

For the purchaser, this has plenty of benefits. I could imagine a couple of price wars happening in this market later on. Although that is my take on it, its just my opinion and quite possibly not what will take place. Premium prices should stay and be constant with the latest laptop computers is what I am thinking. It’s hard to tell what will take place now that the big brands have gotten involved in creating laptops for gaming.

Financing a Small Business with Little or No Capital

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Starting a business without any capital is a daunting task. How do you pay your staff? Where do you find money for stock? What can you do to improve cashflow? These are just some of the questions you’ll face. Read on for a few ideas that helped me in my first year.

Insist on Deposits (To Cover your Expenses)

Deposits are a great way to finance your company without every approaching a bank or a venture capitalist.

Especially in the service industry, it’s very useful to ask for a percentage of a job as a deposit. I always make sure that this amount covers ALL of my hard costs and that it’s paid before any work is done.

Hard costs are costs that you definitely have to pay for the project. For example, your time isn’t a hard cost but materials and contractors needed for the job are.

In some cases, this isn’t practical because it forms a large part of the entire purchase amount, but a small deposit in these instances could still prove very useful.

Offer Monthly Payment Terms to Improve your Cashflow

Customers always appreciate flexible payment terms, so offering different monthly payment options can help you get more accepted quotes as well as improve your cashflow.

It’s important if you decide to offer payment terms to set an effective debt-collection strategy in place. Mine is to simply get my bookkeeper to handle it. They’re often asked to do this sort of thing and tend to be quite good at sending nasty, effective letters of demand.

To cover the expenses of debt collection, it may prove useful for you to add 10% to the quote if a client requests payment terms. This is a very commonly accepted practice and shouldn’t hurt your sales at all.

Re-Sell Other People’s Services

Find companies that offer complimentary services to your own and work out some sort of reseller deal with them. Normally you can arrange this so that your clients never even know that it’s not you providing the service at the end of the day.

The beauty of doing this is that you can offer a great service without investing large amounts of money in having your own equipment, stock & staff. The downside is that you seldom have any control over the final product.

Pay Employees on a Per-Contract Basis

Paying employees for the work they’ve done is a great way to ensure that you don’t end up liquidating your business around the quiet season. It also helps your employees (or contractors) feel motivated to do what is required of them and to do it well.

I recommend checking with your local authorities as to how to structure this. The easiest way is often to have a standard contract drawn up which you change on a per-project basis. This allows you to end the relationship with your contractor as soon as they stop performing. It also allows contractors to move on once they feel they’ve out-grown your company.

I usually include my contractors’ fees in the deposit so I know that if the deal falls through, at least they’ve been paid.

Use Credit Cards as Bridging Capital

Credit cards are a great way to finance a small company, but you need to be careful that you don’t use them for personal or unnecessary purchases.

As long as you keep them paid-up and in-check, you can expect the following benefits from your credit cards:

- Get up to 60 days interest-free!

- The more cards you have, the easier it is to get more.

- Get rewarded for using them.

The biggest problem with credit cards is their high-interest but, as long as you pay the full amount within the interest-free period, they’re MUCH cheaper than any other form of finance!

Running a business with little or no capital is difficult but not impossible. Start using these ideas in your business today and watch it grow!

Norio De Sousa runs a web site, http://www.small-business-hub.co.za, where you can find more information on starting a small business, drawing up a business plan, marketing your company & more.

Mastering a Foreign Language: How To Become A Brilliant Speaker, Part 4 of 7

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

You probably already know that this is one of the most powerful
training tools used by great athletes, musicians, and performers
of all kinds. As a speaker of foreign languages, you are also a
performer! Have you incorporated this powerful training tool in
to your foreign language mastery repertoire yet? Here’s what
you do:

Envision that you are already a brilliant speaker of that
language. What do you sound like? What does it feel like to be
able to understand any question that someone sends your way? How
does it feel to be able to use the foreign language with the
same amount of savvy and finesse that you use your own native
language? The better you can envision this in your mind, the
better you will be able to create it as your reality. As you
envision yourself to be this brilliant speaker, bring it alive in your
senses and experience this thought in rich, minute detail.

In addition to the visual image or yourself speaking fluently, try to imagine the physical sensations in your body, in your
face, and in your vocal cords. Notice any sights around you. Are
there any particular smells? Is there a certain taste in your
mouth? What do you hear? Envision this as vividly as you possibly can,
and do it often.

To help spark your imagination, you can choose someone
(preferably a native speaker of that language) to model. Who do
you know who uses the language brilliantly? Who do you most
want to sound like? When you’ve chosen your model, simply
pretend to be that person. What would she say in this situation?
How does he use words in this case? How does she incorporate
facial expression and body movements to really convey meaning
beyond the words? When you pretend to be your model you’ll
notice an immediate leap in your abilities, and the more you
envision it you’ll be amazed at how quickly those skills will become
your own.

Attitude: Looking For Gold!

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Is your “attitude” a reflection of your career or business or is it that your “career or business” are a reflection of your “attitude?”

Like it or not you do have an attitude, and what you have today is a reflection of your attitude.

Would you change your attitude if you could?

In a busy world it can be difficult to change. If you are like so many others making time for yourself is a challenge.

The idea of changing one more thing is like attempting the “impossible!” It’s not going to happen. So why even bother?

Why would anyone, especially you, consider changing your attitude?

For me the single most noticeable trait I see in others who are living the quality of life I want, is “ATTITUDE!”

Being around people who have a winning attitude is a completely different experience. I can honestly say that it is an experience that inspires me.

It is an experience that leaves me thinking “I want what they have!” “I want a better life!”

I want to enjoy the rewards of having such an attitude. Don’t you?

I want to enjoy the fruits of being the person with a “winning attitude.”

What is it that stops you or I from having the attitude we want?

Time Money Job Education Family Exhaustion

You name it! I am sure there is something that you feel you must have “before you can have the attitude you want.”

Regardless of your reason there is a way that you can make this change and it won’t take the commitment of a monk to make it happen.

Consider this, recognizing that you want to change only takes a moment. To make a lasting change takes time. How much time? That depends on you.

Like cars some of us are built for speed, some are built for long trips, and others are lucky to make it around the block without stalling.

It really only matters that you recognize, you want something different! Are you satisfied with what you have?

There are 7 things you should know about attitude and I am going to share with you the first step to changing your attitude.

Before I go any further let’s talk about why this really matters. I mean is attitude really that important?

Without a “winning attitude” you will never take the action(s) that will give you the career or business you want!

Without a “winning attitude” your life will be average at best. If average is enough then there is no need to read any further. Average simply isn’t enough for me.

It is hard to imagine that anyone has never heard Nike’s slogan “Just Do It!” Their ads speak to attitude. You can feel the energy and the powerful expression of those who simply make up their mind to “Just Do It!”

The Nike ads are filled with “attitude.” An attitude that compels one to act. An attitude that compels one to win, to do more, to be more, and finally to be all they can be.

Attitude drives action. Attitude determines which actions you will or won’t take.

Still, having the attitude you want, can feel like grabbing a fist full of sand and trying to keep the sand from spilling.

The bottomline: Attitude is an outcome. Until you have a winning attitude, possibility will continue avoid you.

Attitude is like money, for most it is elusive. Each are elusive because they are result of the who, what, and where of your life. They are a result of “YOU!”

People will shortcut their way to money only to find that happiness, the only reason they really wanted money in the first place, is still missing.

Attitude isn’t any different. A winning attitude requires a real change to be lasting and meaningful.

Have you ever said to yourself “I must be positive” or “I’ve got to stop being like this” or something similar? If you have, then you understand that willpower and affirmations are not enough.

Faking it until you make it isn’t enough. You know it, and the people around you know it as well. Eveyone knows what you are trying to do and they also know “this too will end.”

If you want to make a lasting change in your attitude, it has to start with “YOU!” “Understanding you” is key!

Change your understanding of you and you will change your attitude.

Where do you start? You start with awareness. You “turn-off your auto-pilot” and become an “active participant in YOUR LIFE!”

1. Stop accepting that life is just that way.

2. Before you say no, ask yourself “why not?”

3. Pay attention to what you feel: ask yourself does this feel good?

4. Begin to ask yourself questions like: “Is this what I want?” or “Is this really the choice I want to make?”

5. Keep a 3×5 spiral notepad and pen or pencil with you throughout your day and begin to write down those thoughts that bubble up during your day.

Don’t let life’s distractions continue to keep you in the dark. Isn’t it time you started to “understand you?”

Isn’t is time you lived the life you want?

Until you know what you are dealing with i.e. “who you are” attitude will be like trying to hold a fist full of sand.

What you have today is a result of the attitude you have had up to this point, i.e. your past.

I can tell you this: It doesn’t matter how many times you have tried, “you CAN make a lasting change.”

You can make a change that will result in an attitude that will transform your career or business.

If you have been trying to do it alone and it hasn’t worked then maybe it is time you started looking for other ways to make it happen.

Having a “winning attitude” is like walking around with a gold mine in your back pocket. Knowing that you can do anything is “priceless!”

Nova Scotia, Canada: The Next New England

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

If you’re on a budget, tired of crowded beaches and packed hotels, love seafood, and have a 19th-century mindset, then Nova Scotia is for you. It’s being called “The Next New England.”

Think New England, and vivid images come to mind: of lighthouses and fishing boats, charming coastal towns, lobster and crab, Victorian homes and rich history. It has always been an intriguing region, steeped in truth and in fiction by the novels of Stephen King. If you like New England, you’ll love Nova Scotia, Canada’s second smallest province.

Find Nova Scotia on a map in the North Atlantic, east of the state of Maine and “vacation hotspot” won’t be the first thing that comes to mind. But don’t let Nova Scotia’s northern location fool you. Summertime temperatures are comfortable and winters are milder and less snowy than in many northern states. Situated just two hours from New York City or Boston, Nova Scotia feels a world away…as if you’ve stepped back in time. Largely underdeveloped and rich in natural beauty, history and culture, this hidden escape has a lot to offer: pristine beaches, resort, spas, B&Bs and country inns, rustic lodges, world-class golf and whale watching.

Just picture England, Ireland or Scotland 100 years ago, and you get a idea of what Nova Scotia is like. Almost an island, it is best known for its picturesque coastline, sleepy fishing villages and friendly people. The province’s gem is Cape Breton Island, an area deeply steeped in Scottish heritage. The island’s breathtaking Cape Breton Highlands National Parkand the Bras d’Or Lake (pronounced “bra door”) are popular with Canadian and foreign travelers alike.

Not only is Nova Scotia a prime tourist destination, but cheap real estate and a reasonable cost of living make it an attractive second home. 1-acre oceanfront lots sale for as little as $10,000, while a three-bedroom home on 5 acres can be had for as little as $50,000. It’s no wonder that Hollywood heavyweights such as Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore have snapped up summer homes here.

Considering its close proximity, not many Americans make it to Nova Scotia. Of those who do, few are disappointed.

Why not go see for yourself?

Introduction to Detox Diets

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Detoxifying the body has become an apparent key preventative measure to all kinds of health problems. Since most of us are busy, and unable or unwilling to maintain a strict diet in order to completely eliminate all the toxins from our body. We have chemicals building up in our bodies day after day. Since these chemicals are not harmful in small amounts, only in larger accumulated amounts, we don’t notice side effects until we are much older. A proper, even if occasional, detox diet is necessary to relieve our bodies of harmful toxins and chemicals, and maintain a healthy, normal, and long-lived life.

The main idea of a detox diet is to eliminate nearly all foods and restrict the body to only water and vegetables for a few days; usually around 5 or 6 days is adequate. Most detox diets then allow for a slow re-introduction of other foods, gradually. The diets generally restrict foods from your diet that are said to have harmful toxins. Along with this a detox diet should then flush the existing toxins out of the body. A detox diet essentially gives the liver and other organs a chance to catch up and remove all the toxins. This is done through our sweat, feces, and urine.

Our bodies simply cannot cope with the normal day to day ingestion of chemicals. Most these chemicals come from foods, as mentioned before, but also have a wide variety of other sources. Although we do not know what foods are the cause of it all, we do know that pesticides, heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, and the chemicals in cigarettes and the air we breath, all enter our bodys via our lungs or stomach and can cause an excessive build up. These chemicals in small amounts are harmless; its the day after day ingestion and build up of them which can lead to degenerative diseases.

One common detox diet is the combination of nothing but fruits and water for a given period. The promotion of chemicals being metabolized by our bodies can be helped with certain vitamins, herbs and supplements. Some supplements will help the mobilization of toxins in our fat and other toxin deposits located throughout the body. Since our bodies rid themselves of chemicals through sweat, sauna therapies can also provide a great benefit. There are many other diets and detox therapies, these are just a few common methods. Regular body detoxification is a good preventative action and promotes a healthier present and future!

How to Choose a Vacation

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

For the person who has traveled the world and wants a new adventure, or the person who likes to live by the beat of their own drum, consider alternative travel options instead of the regular site-seeing or beach resort trips. Here are some ideas to help you find a vacation that you’ll remember for years to come:

Cruises are available that go beyond the typical cruise you’d expect to find sailing the seven seas. Some cruises offer the studious traveler much more, including a well-stocked library as well as workshops and lectures while at sea, usually specifically pertaining to the area of the world you’re exploring.

If you are a fan of a movie you will find travel destinations that are focused around that particular film. For example, Lord of the Rings movie-lovers will enjoy exploring the sets of Peter Jackson’s take on Tolkien’s middle-earth by touring the sets of the movie.

If humanitarianism is your thing, there are many organizations, both religious and non-religious, that allow you to help people in cultures less fortunate than us. You can build wells or homes or markets for them to use. You’ll feel great at the end of this vacation!

For the adventure seekers, a far more exciting experience might be enjoyed by backpacking through rugged wilderness, mountain-climbing, or whitewater rafting.

For the traveler on a budget, you will have a great holiday if you and a group of friends simply choose a place on a map and drive to it for a cup of coffee. Even if the drive takes all weekend, you will gain a lifetime of memories in just a few short days.

For aficionados of a certain pleasure, be it wine, beer, food, or cigars, there are tours available for every taste in nearly every region. For example, you could spend weeks (well, actually months) sampling the fine wines of Italy, or touring the pubs if Ireland, or sampling the delectable foods of France. Whatever your pleasure, you’ll find a travel destination for it.

Or for those interested other pursuits, such as archaeology, architecture, or art, you’ll find tours that are focused on your very interests.

So this year, when you’re deciding what you want to do for a holiday, why choose the same old thing? Go for something daring and different and choose a vacation that will be as unique and memorable as you are. You won’t forget it!

Burn, Baby, Burn!

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Luxury homes are lots of fun to inspect. Sure, the pay is better too, but mostly it’s just fun to see how the other half lives! I also get to meet those people who have reached such a level of financial success that they are buying a home that seems like it could have been a boarding school!

One of the fun aspects of inspecting large and expensive homes is seeing furnishing and interior design work at the highest level. Unfortunately, that high level does not always translate to attractive! Good-sized decorating budgets does not always mean good taste. One such mansion sticks always in my mind.

Among the oldest and most prestigious sections of Jacksonville, Florida is Ortega. Situated along a wide expanse of the St. Johns River with a fabulous view of the downtown skyline is Ortega Boulevard. In our fair town, that address spells success!

It is always a thrill to inspect on Ortega Boulevard. The homes were built during the 1920’s and 30’s by the business and political leaders of the time. In a state not known for architecture, homes on Ortega Boulevard can be compared proudly with any in America. But that does not mean that some folks don’t commit creative crimes in the decorating department!

The listing agent was thrilled to have this home as the corner piece of an envious listing portfolio. One point, though, kept coming up in comments made by would-be buyers after being shown the beautiful home. The plum-painted walls on nearly the entire first floor made the interior look like the set from the old “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” television show! This simply had to be corrected to attract a buyer to the home.

Upon arrival at the home, I parked behind the painter’s truck. When I went into the home, a team of painters was busy working to cover “plum” with “eggshell”. Their best guess was that three coats would do it; I was betting on five!

As is always the protocol, all the lights, appliances, and heating were turned on for the home inspection. My company calls this our “Super Bowl” check. Seems that the greatest stresses a home undergoes is during the Super Bowl. There are usually dozens of people around, all of whom are using multiple televisions, cooking, washing, showering, and consuming every possible stitch of electricity. And all of this is going on simultaneously! If the systems continue to work during the Super Bowl, they will work fine during routine family use, or so the theory goes.

So, while zipping about the house checking here and checking there, one of the painters called out that he smelled smoke! If the home catches on fire during the Super Bowl that is most certainly a penalty.

Upon my arrival to the electrical panel, I smelled heat and burning wire. I then ran to the exterior to disconnect power at the switch adjacent to the meter, which was on fire! I told the real estate agent to call the fire department while I secured the power to the home. Things were going to be fine.

To my surprise and confusion, she became upset with me for securing power to the home. When I asked her why she is upset that I had secured power to the burning electrical panel, she exclaimed, “Wally, if you turn off the power, the painters won’t be finished today!” I reminded her that if the home continued to burn, it wouldn’t need paint!

The old adage “when you’re surrounded by alligators, sometimes it’s hard to remember that you came here to drain the swamp” must have been coined by a guy who was working for a real estate agent in Florida.
