Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Damaging US Economy

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Repetitive strain injuries (RSI’s) like carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are costing consumers, private business and insurance companies more than $100 billion in lost revenue each year.

According to The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research , ” Musculoskeletal disorders are the country’s most costly category of workplace injuries and illnesses. In addition to spending $20 billion annually on workers’ compensation costs due to RSIs (Like Carpal tunnel syndrome), the U.S. spends another $100 billion on lost productivity, employee turnover, and other indirect expenses.

The goal of every private business and insurance company should be to cut costs, and this goal can only be met when carpal tunnel syndrome and other “tunnel syndrome” disorders are addressed in a scope of “prevention” rather than after the fact and have to address the injury through “rehabilitation” methods. Rehabilitation costs to businesses and insurance companies are much greater than costs associated with prevention, and has an even higher toll on the individual afflicted with the disorder (carpal tunnel) in terms of both psychological and physical damages.

The key to cutting costs associated with CTS and RSI’s is “prevention”, which can be achieved through a variety of methods. By implementing the methods listed below, overall costs can be reduced dramatically and optimum health and productivity of the individual can be maintained.

Job Rotation: Individuals that rotate tasks, including the amount of force they utilize for each task and the amount of time each task is performed reveals a great reduction in the level of carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain injuries.

Stretch / Exercise Breaks: Taking a short break every 30-45 minutes is key to reducing the onset of repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome. The most important prevention element on this list is to perform appropriate exercises and stretches to improve circulation and keep the muscles in tune and balanced. (For a good list of stretches and exercises, speak to the employee health director or to a certified therapist)

Workstation: Operating in the correct environment is “key” to reducing the possibility of getting carpal tunnel syndrome. Proper seating, a good keyboard, computer screen, mouse, desk set-up, positioning, etc. is critical to reducing the amount of strain experienced on a daily basis.

Tools: When using tools for assembly and construction, you must be sure that they are properly designed to fit you, not someone else.

To save as much money as possible for everyone involved, it is wise to implement as many of the elements listed above. By addressing all angles conceivable, the chances of an injury reduce dramatically and workers stay healthy. When workers are healthy, productivity and output increase, reducing healthcare costs and increasing the bottom line for all.

Jeff Anliker, LMT, is a Therapist and Inventor of Therapeutic Exercise Products that are utilized by Corporations, Consumers and Medical Facilities around the world for the prevention and rehabilitation of repetitive strain injuries. repetitive-strain.com

My Personal Favorite Candida Remedies (Anti-Fungals)

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Candida can mimic, cause, or worsen Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome symptoms. For this reason, a natural approach to these autoimmune disorders should include a plan to fight candida. The following is a list of my favorite remedies. (These should be combined with an anti-candida diet to be effective.)

Oil of Oregano-

Oregano oil has been used as a medicine for thousands of years and has been shown to be potent against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, like Candida, and parasites. Oregano oil was compared to the pharmaceutical drug, Nystatin, and found to be just as powerful. Also, studies done at Georgetown University Medical found that the oil inhibited the growth of staphylococcus bacteria as effectively as conventional antibiotics.

Germanium Sesquioxide-

Practitioners all have their personal favorites when it comes to Candida/anti-fungal treatments. (I am limiting my list to the ones I have personally used and found effective.) For candidiasis, Epstein-Barr Syndrome, and allergies, Dr. Lester Rose, M.D., recommends Germanium Sesquioxide (Ge-132) He starts his patients at 600 mg daily and has them taper down to 150 mg over a course of three weeks. He does this in combination with the supplements CoQ10 at 60 mg twice a day and 3 SOD (Superoxide Dismutase) tablets. Germanium is believed to be effective against yeast and viruses because it increases oxygen in the body and these organisms are oxygen sensitive. Grapefruit Seed Extract (Citrus Seed Extract)

Grapefruit Seed Extract-

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is a natural broad-spectrum antibiotic. It has also been shown effective against some viruses and Candida yeast. This extract has been studied for use against Staphylococcus (Staph), Streptococcus (Strep), Salmonella, Chlamydia trachomatis, Herpes simplex 1, Influenza A2, and the measles virus. It can also be used as a non-toxic hand sanitizer. A Brazilian study found it to be almost as effective for skin disinfection as commercially available surgical soap.

Note: Those sensitive to citrus can develop an allergy to grapefruit seed.

Shark Liver Oil-

An ingredient in shark liver oil, Squalamine, was found effective against yeast by Johns Hopkins University.

Probiotics-

Once candida has become overgrown, the body’s colony of good bacteria that should populate the gut cannot be re-established without treatment. Probiotics are needed to keep down the candida population.

Digestive Enzymes-

It is hypothesized that digestive enzymes work by breaking down the Candida in much the same way they break down food.

Note: This is not intended as medical advice.

Heidi Whitaker is an author and popular speaker on the topic of nutritional support of autoimmune disease. An advocate for alternative health solutions, she co-founded http://www.healthydivas.com, a resource center for those autoimmune sufferers looking for real answers outside of what conventional medicine can provide.

Hypnosis - Not Quite Utopia

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Look, I want to have loads and loads of money, but I don’t want to do any work in order to have it. Have you any suggestions? Seriously, apart from buying a lottery ticket - do you have any suggestions? I want to laze around all day and just have money arrive in my bank account, and not just little bits of money - loads and loads of it, and I want it guaranteed for life. Not only that but I want it right now, and I’m only prepared to pay you £40 for you to give that to me, and even that seems a little steep, so if you could give it for free that’d be great. I don’t want to hear you saying that you might be able to help me, or that I might be able to learn something that might take a couple of months, I need it and I need it now.

I hope you are laughing.

I hope you are at least smiling.

Sounds a bit like a child doesn’t it?

If you change money, to a cure for anxiety, or stress, or phobia, or smoking, or losing weight, or nail biting, or marital problems, or excessive drinking, or blushing, or headaches, or pain, or a whole host of other physical and psychological problems… then what you have in the opening paragraph is what most people expect from hypnosis.

Many don’t want to be responsible for their own health, and don’t want to put any personal effort (other than turning up for one, or at most two, appointments) into getting better and although a hypnotherapist is always the last resort, they expect miracles from him or her that they wouldn’t dream of expecting from a psychologist, psychiatrist or medical doctor.

Hypnosis needs the full involvement of the patient in order for results to be achieved. It needs a commitment to stick with treatment until the problem is resolved or it is quite clear that the treatment is having no further impact on the problem. Sometimes we need our problems, but that’s another article. And when we need our problems we are quite often strongly resistant to having someone help us to resolve them - or even to allow someone sufficient access to our minds to discover what exactly the reason is.

Another reason for the unreasonable expectations people have of hypnosis and hypnotherapists is that hypnosis is seen as some sort of general anaesthetic. I’ve lost track of the number of people (even doctors) who expect me to ‘put them out’, and are disappointed when that doesn’t happen. But because they see hypnosis as a general anaesthetic they expect some sort of ‘mental operation’ to take place while they are ‘out’ and to be ‘fixed’ when they ‘come round’, as if their life-long anxiety pattern, or over-eating habit was some appendix that could be whipped out, the hole sewn up and the pain gone.

These problems can be helped, eased, or restored to what might be considered normal, using hypnosis. Sometimes it’s straightforward, sometimes it takes effort and determination to resolve the issues that are reducing quality of life. I remember in my early days as a hypnotherapist, at the end of a course of treatment a patient said to me that what I had given her was like coming down on Christmas morning and opening a gift to find in it what she most desired in the world, it was like I’d given her her life back.

That’s the potential of hypnosis.

Games Gambling Aficionados like to Participate in: a Guide to Gambling Saloon Taking a Chance

Friday, November 28th, 2008

free online gambling

Assuming that you don’t comprehend casino betting, do read on.

Generally speaking a gaming room is a construction that focuses on wagering. At such a place, aficionados will hopefully bet handling coin-operated machines or plenty of other pastimes. Betting house games routinely include well calculated balances governing them which promise the gambling saloon holds on to an interest over the clients.

A number of gambling house games can incite you into being overly habituated in no time. For example the archetypal 1-armed-bandit, a coin operated gadget with 3, sometimes more discs which rotate once a knob on its side is moved. The gadget as a rule will compensate punters based on a combination of symbols asvisible on the panel of the contraption. Regrettably, gaming hall games present the apparition of influence, thus deluding the customer - the punter is given a few decisions, but in reality they will never compensate for the gamer’s long term negative odds. That is brought about by the the gaming hall never refunding the full sum as expected. This mode is regularly found in acclaimed casino games like five card stud, dice games, roulette or blackjack.

Straight poker is really a very fashionable casino pastime. The gambling buffs, holding partially covered cards, place the stakes in a central pot which is finally given to the last player carrying the leading hand. (And as eveyone knows, the shameless bluff may actually win as well.)

Analogous to stud poker, blackjack is likewise an incredibly trendy casino pastime. A sizeable amount of its celebrity is owed to its particular mix of luck and knowledge and choice making, not to mention a method labeled “card counting”. It is a particularly complex technique through which players may actually force the winning odds of the game to give them an advantage both by wagering & procedural decisions in agreement with the cards deployed.

“Craps” is yet another very popular pastime based on the roll of a couple of dice. Bettors place the stakes on the outcome of of one spin, or on a sequence of rolls on 2 dice. Very much unlike blackjack, there can’t be a reliable sustainable killer system punters could exercise to beat the odds.

Roulette is an eminently popular casino pastime — a croupier rotates a roulette wheel holding thirty seven (applies to classical roulette) or precisely thirtyeight (Vegas roulette) uniquely tagged receptacles in which the white pellet must settle, which establishes the winning number Supposing that our player wagers on a particular number and strikes it big so they’ve got a lucky hand, the premium is going to be thirty-five to one, the original stake will be returned. Thus in totality the original pledge is multiplied by thirty-six.

So be on guard because all of these gaming hall games of chance can be very much obsessive. Uncounted lives have probably been damaged by reckless gambling + notwithstanding that it feels enjoyable, do your best to regulate your gambling.

What’s There to Know about Wooden Flooring?

Friday, November 28th, 2008

If you are thinking about getting wooden flooring for your home it’s a good idea that you have an understanding what the various wood terms mean. There are huge array of online flooring retailers, and its important to understand there are several different factors which all influence how the flooring appears, and makes each wooden floor look unique. It is very unlikely that the wooden floor you saw in the showroom or on the internet will look exactly the same as when it’s fitted in your home.

The reason people like hardwood floors is that they are not uniform. One factor which effects the appearance of the wood is how close the wood is to the bark of the tree, this is called sapwood. The closer to the outside of the tree, the lighter the colour the wood will appear. The grain of the wood is another major factor, this can vary is direction and also varies in appearance depending on the colour of the wood fibers. The growth rings of the tree are also a significant factor which effect how the wood looks. Tightly packed layers of wood are likely to result in a darker colour, these are formed when only a marginal layer of wood is added per year during a growing season. Other factors which can have an effect on the wood are mineral Streaks. These occur when trace elements are in the water, resulting in grey and olive markings. Knots are also a big factor in the appearance of your flooring, and are produced where branches of a tree have been encased, as the tree has grown. Often lower grade flooring will have more knots in it than higher grade.

The great thing about wooden flooring is its durability, and also the ease with which damage can be repaired. But because it is a natural product, as opposed to synthetic, it is also prone to expand and contract during changes in the weather or season. This needs to be taken into account when your floor is fitted.

Brief Overview of Tibetan Medicine

Friday, November 28th, 2008

What is Tibetan Medicine? Practiced for over 2,500 years, Tibetan medicine is a system of medicine that is one of the five major sciences. Also called “gSoba Rig-pa, ” (the science of healing), Tibetan medicine includes the use of various types of herbs, precious metals, saps, soils, resins and even rocks. While ninety-five percent of Tibetan medicine is comprised mainly of herbs, some precious metals are utilized for “Rinchen rilpo,” or precious pill.

Tibetan medicine is known to be helpful for illnesses such as asthma, anxiety, digestive problems, eczema, hepatitis, liver conditions, and other chronic diseases. Based on Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan medicine keeps in tune with the theory of balancing the “Nyipa sum,” — rLung (”loong”), “mKhris-pa,” and “Bad-kan.” According to Tibetan medicine, these Nyipa sum are the primary factors of ill health, and are known as the three poisons of desire, hatred and delusion.

Nyipa sum:

Tibetan medicine holds a belief that Nyipa sum is the in and outflow of energy from the five elements of air, earth, fire, space and water. Theoretically, Tibetan medicine finds that rLung’s functions are to help with growth, body movement, breathing and mind, body and speech. In Tibetan medicine, there are 5 types of rLung:

  • “Srog-’dzin” - located in the brain;

  • “Gyen-rgyu” - located in the chest;

  • “Khyab-byed” - located in the heart;

  • “Me-mnyam” - located in the stomach; and finally,

  • “Thur-sel” - located inthe rectum.

The second type of Nyipa sum in Tibetan Medicine is comprised of mKhris-pa. Tibetan medicine explains that mKhris-pa’s function is to maintain the balance of body temperature. Five components of mKhris-pa are:
  • “Ju-byed” - located between the stomach and intestine;
  • “sGrub-byed” - located in the heart;
  • “mdangs-sgyur” - located in the liver;
  • “mThong-byed” - located in the eyes; and the fifth element of Mkhris-pa in Tibetan medicine is
  • “mDog-sel” - located in the skin.

The third type of Nyipa sum is Bad-kan, and it too is comprised of five elements:

  • “rTen-byed” - located in the chest;
  • “Myag-byed” - located in the upper region;
  • “Myong-byed” - located in the tongue;
  • “Tsim-byed” - located in the head; and last,
  • “Byor-byed” - located in the joints.

Tibetan medicine uses three methods of diagnosis via observation, palpation and questioning. Aside from unrine analysis, Tibetan medicine practitioners observe patient’s tongue, pulse taking, and asking the patient specifically about the problem s/he is encountering.

Tibetan medicine treatments, depending on type of Nyipa sum, include advisement of dietary intake; behavioural regimens including two examples of remaining in dark and warm places or cold baths and showers; herbal medicines like agollocha, charantia, and others; and mild or rough “surgery” comprised of special butter and oily compress massage; cupping or blood-letting; or golden needle therapy — to name a few.

Top 3 Reasons Why You Suffer From Pain In The Back Of The Knee

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Pain behind the knee is something many of us have or might experience if we play sports that involve bending at the knees, running, tennis, or any activity that puts strain on the area.

Here are some things you need to keep in mind if you ever experience such pain behind the knee:

1. Possible Arthritis

This is one of the most common causes of pain in the knee. In fact, if you are over the age of 65 one in two of you have arthritis with the knee been one of the most common joints involved.

The pain of arthritis is usually a dull tooth ache pain that is occasionally sharp with sudden movements. The pain is usually located over your joint line (where the tibia meets the femur) and in the front of the knee. Mild and sometimes severe swelling is associated with this pain. The pain is worse when you exit a chair or car. It is also worse with any prolonged walking or standing. The pain is usually better with rest, heat (sometimes ice), wrapping the knee and pain medication.

Occasionally the knee may catch on the rough uneven surfaces of your cartilage. Patients often complain of grinding in the knee, and occassional popping.

2. Minor Tear of the Cartilage Surface

Rather then a cyst or fluid build-up, the causes of the pain behind the knee might simply be slight micro tears in the cartilage. This can be treated with the same solutions at the end of this article. Tears, if minor, require no surgery and will heal on their own depending on the time allowed for healing and if the activity that aggravates it is avoided.

3. Baker’s Cyst The cyst usually occurs due to some other problem in your knee such as arthritis or even a tear of your meniscus. The swelling from this problem causes fluid to build up in your knee. This fluid pushes out the weakest point of your joint capsule surrounding your knee. This is usually to the back portion of your knee capsule, and a cyst forms. The cyst has a valve made out of your joint capsule tissue. This valve can sometimes become clogged and the fluid becomes trapped in the cyst. Thus, even when the injury has resolved, you still have the swelling in the back of your knee. This is associated with pain usually described as dull and aching. The pain is worse with prolonged walking or standing. It is sometimes improved with rest, elevation and taking pain medication.

Many people agree that when it comes to pain behind the knee, the best plan of action is Control, Avoid, and Rehabilitate.

Control:

Cryotheraphy which involves putting ice on the area for 5 minutes at a time. This will help reduce the pain. Do not continue to apply ice if a burning sensation is felt.

Heat from a heating pad for 10-20 minutes on a lower setting may help reduce pain. Alternative methods include creams that create a heating sensation like Icy-Hot or AST BioFreeze gel.

Bracing from a comfortable knee brace can provide some needed relief and stability to the area, reducing the pressure on the area and thus; reducing the pain. There are many knee braces available that can be worn during activity or at any time where the area becomes bothersome.

Avoid:

There’s nothing special about this old saying. Simply avoid the activities that aggravate the pain and participate in ones that seem to help it. Making a list of things NOT to do and a list of things TO DO will be helpful in determining what makes the pain worse. Avoid activities that continue to make the pain worse or no better. This is typical advice. Pain is a warning signal.

Rehabilitate:

Talk to a Doctor and make a plan of action to rehabilitate the knee thru controlled motions. Rehabilitation includes motivation to do the prescribed exercises. The correct exercises as prescribed and the proper equipment to keep the motions in controlled.

Pain behind the knee is very common in some many sports that you can suffer from this by doing almost anything from snowboarding to racquetball. By taking precautions in your sports and understanding what might cause this, will allow not only enjoyable sports activities, but a lifetime of activity.

Muget Des Bois: A Healing Victory

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Known by its other name as Lily of the Valley or May Lily, muget des bois is an English plant used commonly as a perfume. Since the discovery of its virtues in aromatherapy, the use of muget des bois for healing has been increasingly widespread.

History

According to a Sussex legend, St Leonard battled against a great dragon in the woods near Horsham and drove the beast away at the cost of being mortally wounded, but wherever his blood fell, lilies of the valley

sprung up to commemorate his valiant struggle. The 16th century herbalist John Gerard, recommended muget des bois for those who had dumb palsie and those who had fallen into apoplexy.

Muget des bois is one of the British-grown plants included in the Pharmacopoeia, and its medicinal values have been tested through time.

Ecology

A native of Europe, muget des bois may also be found throughout the woodlands over North America and Northern Asia. In England, it grows wild in abundance. Muget des bois is a perennial plant that grows to 9 inches high, has a pair of elliptical leaves and clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers with sweet-smelling aroma.

The specific name for Lily of the Valley is majalis, or maialis, meaning that which belongs to May. Old astrological books place the plant under the planet Mercury, since Maia was the mother of Mercury.

Health Notes

This herb contains cardiac glycosides, which regulates and strengthens the heart while slowing and regulating the heart beat without exerting its coronary blood supply. With its strong diuretic properties, muget des bois reduces blood volume and lowers blood pressure to ease the irritable heart.

It without doubt strengthens the brain and renovates a weak memory. The spirit of the flowers, distilled in wine, restoreth lost speech, helps the palsy, and is exceedingly good in apoplexy, comforteth the heart and vital spirits.

Social Engineering - The Real E-Terrorism?

Monday, November 24th, 2008

One evening, during the graveyard shift, an AOL technical support operator took a call from a hacker. During the hour long conversation the hacker mentioned he had a car for sale. The technical support operator expressed an interest so the hacker sent him an e-mail with a photo of the car attached. When the operator opened the attachment it created a back door that opened a connection out of AOL’s network, through the firewall, allowing the hacker full access to the entire internal network of AOL with very little effort on the hacker’s part.

The above is a true story and it is an excellent example of one of the biggest threats to an organisation’s security - social engineering. It has been described as people hacking and it generally means persuading someone inside a company to volunteer information or assistance.

Examples of techniques employed by hackers include:

  • Unobtrusively observing over your shoulder as you key in your password or PIN.

  • Calling helpdesks with questions or being overly friendly

  • Pretending to be someone in authority.

Social engineering attacks can have devastating consequences for the businesses involved. Accounts can be lost, sensitive information can be compromised, competitive advantage can be wiped out and reputation can be destroyed.

By implementing some simple techniques you can reduce the risk of your organisation becoming a victim or, in the event that you are targeted, keep the consequences to a minimum.

  • Make sure that all staff, especially non-IT staff, are aware of the risk of social engineering and what to do in the event of such an attack.

  • Conduct regular security awareness training so that all staff are kept up to date with security related issues.

  • Implement a formal incident reporting mechanism for all security related incidents to ensure there is a rapid response to any breaches.

  • Ensure that the company has security policies and procedures in place, that all staff are aware of them and that they are followed.

  • Put an information classification system in place to protect sensitive information.

Conduct regular audits, not only on IT systems but also on policies, procedures and personnel so that any potential weaknesses can be addressed as soon as possible.

The Truth About Dandelions!

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Dandelions are not weeds! They are wild vegetables. In Greek mythology, Hecate fed Theseus dandelions for 30 days so he would
become powerful enough to defeat the Minotaur. Though this is just the stuff of legend, this story gives us an insight as to the powerful properties of the lowly dandelions.

In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared that dandelions are more nutritious than broccoli and spinach. Attractive to birds and deer, these wild vegetables make excellent food for gerbils, hogs, cows, horses, and poultry.

Do you know that in Pueblo, Colorado it is illegal to grow dandelions? These folks are certainly missing a lot. Dandelions may taste bitter, but if harvested and cooked right, they can be delicious while they are downright nutritious.

And here are some more little known facts. Dandelions have medicinal value as a diuretic; fats and cholesterol cutter; gas pain reliever; treatment for kidney stones; cancer and diabetes fighter; blood cleanser; weight reducer; vision sharpener; skin and acne treatment; bowel functions regulator; blood pressure controller; and, solution to the anemia problem.

Dandelions can flavor beverages and juices; and may be used in recipes for omelets, salads, gelatins, quiche, soup, pasta dishes, breads, pizza, gravy, dips, spreads, pies, cookies, jellies, waffles, fritters, and pudding. And did we mention ice cream?

All parts of the dandelion are useful. The leaves can be cooked as table vegetables; the blossoms transformed into wines and jelly; and last but not the least, the roots can be made into coffee. So the next time you pass by a field of dandelions, don’t just remark out how yellow the whole place lookspick some along the way, and try them for lunch!
